Chapter 12

FIONA

I love Spring in Dallas. The weather was perfect, never reaching into the eighties and very comfortable for her early morning runs. She had started doing yoga two mornings a week with Gwen and Natalia. Fiona didn’t think she would enjoy it, and she questioned whether it would be a good enough workout, but she was wrong. She took a deep, cleansing breath and breathed out. She was happy. Fiona and Sean spent almost every evening together after work, usually at his house with his sons. Multiple times over the last three months, she had tried to tell him she loved him, and each time, he silenced her with a kiss. Fiona had given her notice for her apartment. She had enlisted the help of Natalia’s friend to find a better apartment now that she was making more money. Sean walked in on her phone call with the realtor, setting up appointments to view apartments. He stood at the door with a soft smile, patiently waiting. The expression on his face reminded Fiona of the look her father had shared with her mother before his death. A cross between a radiant smile and a need to have someone’s sole attention. She smiled, and he whispered he’d bring her lunch at eleven.

Fiona read a text from Colin, reminding her about the new episode of the cooking show they all watched. After six weeks in a cast and some physical therapy, Colin’s arm had healed good as new. Well, except for the gnarly scar on his arm. He’d been embarrassed, and Jacob suggested he tell everyone he’d been in a knife fight if they were rude enough to ask about it. Fiona laughed, recalling Colin’s reaction to Sean’s long grounding. He hoped it would be a reminder to not do something like that again.

Sean walked in with a bag of Romanos and a drink carrier. He set it down on the square table in the corner of her office and she smiled. “You brought me lunch?” Sean nodded. Fiona sat down at the table as Sean placed her entrée before her with an iced tea. He opened the container with the bread and Fiona smirked. “What’s going on?”

She smirked at his deer-in-the-headlight impression. “I wanted to discuss where you’re going to live when your lease runs out.” Fiona set her piece of bread down and readjusted in her chair. Sean smiled. “I assume you’ve got some places to go see.”

“Yes.” Fiona took a bite of her lasagna, not wanting it to get cold. “I included better security in my required amenities.”

“That’s good. But maybe you should just move in with me and the boys?”

Fiona dropped her fork in her plastic container. Her eyes were searching his face for a joking smile or a laugh. “What?”

Sean chuckled. “Wow, this is all it takes to fluster you? I should have made this offer sooner. It’s outstanding to see you speechless.”

Fiona’s brow wrinkled, and she opened and closed her mouth to speak. “I don’t understand.
